The Wentworth in Jackson, NHName:The Wentworth InnWebsite: Here Phone: (603) 383-9700 Address: Route 16A, Jackson, NH 03846 Rating: 4 Peaks The Wentworth, which bills itself as an “Elegant Country Inn”, is a lovely piece of Jackson history, beautifully well-preserved and run by Fritz and Ellie Koeppel. When we first came to Jackson, Swiss-born Fritz and Ireland-native Ellie made us feel very welcome as “the new kids on the block”. They introduced us to some of the other newbie innkeepers as well, hosting a lovely dinner for us all. It was a lovely gesture which I will never forget. Their extensive experience as Innkeepers was freely shared, and we will always thank them for their openness and generosity. The Wentworth is open to the public for dinner, which is a rather formal affair. Proper attire is required (jackets for men, ‘elegant casual’ for women), and reservations are highly suggested. The Wentworth is an example of Fine Dining done well, and is priced accordingly. Only the finest silverware, flatware and glasses are used, and are complimented by high thread linens. This is a place to go for a special occasion as a lovely experience, but not necessarily if there are a lot of hungry men in your party! The plates are beautifully presented, but the style is ‘minimalist’ and the portions very small. This works fine for me, as I am a light eater, but as my husband often reminds me, he doesn’t do well living on ‘hummingbird food’! While we enjoy going to The Wentworth occasionally, my husband and sons find the experience to be more of an expensive “appetizer’, and after dining usually come home “to eat”! It’s the quality, not the quantity, which is emphasized here. Entrees range from $25 - $28, but everything from soup, appetizers, salads and dessert is a la carte. They also have a fine wine list. The Chef is a graduate of New England Culinary Institute and has had extensive experience and training in New England. Fritz’ son Erik Leighton Koeppel is an accomplished fine artist, specializing in oil paintings which you will find adorning the walls in the various dining rooms at The Wentworth. His extensive work may be found in various galleries throughout the world. As you can see, everything about eating here is an artistic experience. (Let them know you’re our guest by showing your Lodge key to get 10% off the food portion of your bill). Not appropriate for families with children. Directions Getting to the Wentworth Inn is only a few minute drive away. You make a left out of the Lodge parking lot. Go 100 yards and make a right onto Main Street.
