The Red Parka has been around for a long time, and has a large local following since 1972, (especially for Open Mike nights and various events held in the Pub). It’s not really located in Jackson, but is very close, and since it’s the only Steakhouse and Salad Bar in the area, we felt we had to include it. Not only that, but the owners of the Red Parka are very community-minded and always supporting a good cause or a locally needy family (due to an accident, cancer, house fire … you name it). They frequently have benefit dinners that raise money for these causes, and are well-respected locally.

The atmosphere is casual in the restaurant, and can sometimes be downright boisterous in the bar (a separate area from dining, thank goodness!). They can accommodate large and small parties, and can seat 140, but they do not take reservations. The name makes reference to the days before ski fashions predominated the slopes, and red ski parkas with large yellow crosses were worn by the Ski Patrol crews. Since skiers abound here in the winter, the name still makes sense. The “Skiboose”, an actual train honoring the snow trains of the past which brought skiers by the thousands to the mountains, is now a dining car in which you may eat! They advertise that they use only fresh, choice beef. As vegetarians, we’re not the most likely choice to review the menu, but the food is always good: average to above average.

The dining room is clean, and the meals are consistent. The salad bar is a really nice addition and has a good variety to choose from, including crusty loaves of bread. There are always crayons on the table for the kids to use while waiting for their meals. Another nice touch is a large screen in the dining room which plays a variety of extreme sports videos. They are really fun to watch! Families are welcome, as well as couples and the singles drinking crowd. Prices are very moderate and the portions are ample.
