This restaurant is a winner if you are a kid or a family; it’s a highly popular spot and has been literally packed to the gills since opening day! The Muddy Moose has a clean, woodsy décor, from the field stone working fireplace to the antler chandeliers. Snowshoes, rustic log furnishings, and a rowboat with oars are some of the accoutrements that help create the North Country ambience. This is not fine country dining but it is good food but served well. The results are very satisfying. There are lots of menu choices, all of which are very kid-friendly. This is one of our youngest son Joshua’s favorite places to eat. His “usual” is the “River Run Fish Melt with cheese” … a generous portion of hand-battered haddock on a large hard roll, with tartar sauce, cheese, lettuce, tomato and Bermuda onion. When given the choice of cole slaw or onion rings as the side order that comes with his meal, he makes it easy on himself and asks for both! (A gift certificate to the Muddy Moose on birthdays or at Christmas always makes a big hit with him).

Other family favorites are ‘Moosini Vegetini’ (a penne pasta tossed with garlic, diced tomato, mushrooms, scallions & feta cheese, sautéed in white wine with a basil and pine nut pesto); the ‘Greek Salad’ topped with salmon; and Spinach Ravioli. There is a Grilled Portabella with broccoli, tomato & onion, topped with chesse & a poppyseed dressing on a hard roll that is also very good. If you’re a meat eater and want to go really rustic like the décor, you can order things like ‘Wild Bill’s Buffalo Enchilada’; ‘Trapper Dale’s Venison’ Pasta, or ‘Fresh Rainbow Trout’. The biggest down side here is that peak meal times are very crowded, and the acoustics are not the best … too much wood on the floors, walls and ceilings which can make it very noisy during peak dining times, but during the nice weather you can eat out on the back deck and see the beautiful view of the Ledges.
