The Black Cap Grille opened in the summer of 2009 in the new shopping complex that houses Eastern Mountain Sports at the far southern end of town. The ambience is quite upscale and reminded me a bit of Greenwich Village when I went in the first time. The high ceilings, sculptural carpets lighting fixtures and room divider give it a clean, boutique-y feel, but it is also very family friendly and there were many children eating with their parents each time we’ve been. In warm weather, you have the option of eating at their sidewalk café. My first experience at the Black Cap Grille was taking our son Noah to lunch one day before he left for college.

We were pleasantly surprised, being impressed with the service as well as the food and the prices. We have all eaten there many times since and have not been disappointed. The menu isn’t so extensive that it is overwhelming, but there is enough variety to tempt many different taste buds and keep you trying different items each subsequent visit. The ‘Black Bean Quesadilla’ appetizer was very good, as was the ‘Strawberry, Arugula and Goat Cheese Salad’. The ‘Classic Cesar’ seemed very typical, nothing over the top about it, but I added salmon to it for a very reasonable upcharge and it was crispy on the outside and moist inside; very tasty! The ‘Local Farmstand Salad’ was delicious and very fresh, using what appeared to be local produce.

One of the tastiest selections we tried was the Black Garlic Hummus Wrap. Black garlic has been aged for a month in a special fermentation process so it develops a darker color, softer texture and a sweeter taste. It doesn’t sound all that appetizing, but believe me, it is! It is wrapped up with roasted peppers, red onion, cucumber, lettuce & tomato in a flour tortilla. My family likes the “Build Your Own Burger” side of the menu. Most of us are vegetarians, and a veggie burger is one of the choices. They also offer natural beef, turkey or free-range chicken burgers. Next choice is the type of bun, then toppings, side orders and accoutrements. We like this place; it’s a good choice when shopping in North Conway, or when going to a movie on that end of town.
